Array A couple of years later, FEMA came back with a bunch of money to loan to people with earthquake damage in South-Central Los Angeles. Once they had determined to loan money, they were going to loan money no matter what. By analogy, I suppose you can expect FEMA to show up in Shreveport in a couple of years with lots of money to loan. There is a cat food named Science Diet. They say it has all the nutrients every cat needs. There seems to be a difference between the nutrients cats need and the nutrients cats want. I don’t like all the stuff I’m supposed to eat any better than the cat does.

If the Celtics had taken that soul legend, they wouldn’t have to pay jokers like Chris Brown to lip-sych about sipping champagne after games. Celtics draft Darren Tillis, Tony Guy, Perry Moss in 1982.There aren’t many Red Auerbach goofs on this list, but this is one. The Celtics’ first three picks in the draft didn’t add up to much, and yet Mark The Werewolf Eaton was taken in the fourth round. Yes, the Celtics probably should have taken Eddie Jones, who went tenth. Here is the list of players the Celtics could have taken that would have been roughly 8,000% more hilarious. Michael Smith, 13th pick in the 1989 draft. The list of players taken after this BYU product is staggering. The fact that the Celts picked up the superior chain smoking European, Dino Radja, in the second round does soften the blow, but the fact that the Celtics could have had a Yugoslavian and Croatian on the same team is painful to think about now.8. However, here is a list of good players that the Celtics passed up for Moiso: Desmond Mason, MoPete, Speedy Claxton, frikkin’ Michael Redd and worst of all, Khalid El-Amin!!! Ben Pepper, 27th pick, 2nd round, 1997No, I dont think that the Celtics should have taken Nate Erdmann or Roberto Duenas instead. He was a 7 foot Australian dude who the Celtics picked with the third-to-last pick in the draft after missing out on another 7-footer, Tim Duncan in the lottery. Instead of the greatest power forward in history, the Celtics picked up some honkey from down under that nobody, and I do mean nobody, including those covering the draft, had ever heard of. Kris Klack, 26th pick, 2nd round, 1999Klack was the fourth-to-last player taken this draft. Instead, the Celtics took a guy with explosive athletic ability that finished his career without a highlight, even in summer league. Joe Forte, 21st pick, 2001The only pick from 2001 worse than Kedrick Brown (and Kirk Haston) was Joe Forte. The Celtics had a legitimate steal on their hands in the seventh pick with Randy Foye. The Celtics traded him away for the worst team in the league’s THIRD STRING POINT GUARD- an undersized, overhyped, overdressed, self-indulgent wuss with a penchant for hiding loaded guns in odd locations. This is, by far, the most the Celtics have EVER been ripped off on draft day. but the Foye-for-Telfair trade would be like the T-Wolves drafting Jeff Green seventh and then trading him to the Celtics for Scalabrine.1. You heard it here first- the draft in 2007 will be one for the record books.*UPDATE* While Celtics fans around the world (and by world I mean greater worcester area) battle anxiety attacks and sleepless nights worrying how Boston will screw up another season, I *Heart* Celtics has gotten exclusive footage of a recurring (wet) dream Danny Ainge has enjoyed every night as he sleeps soundly:

by Tim Bousquet Original Article from The CoastIllustration by Moon Hee NamBy now everyone has heard about global warming, and all but a few deluded denialists and oil company shills accept the overwhelming scientific consensus that it is a real threat to the future of the planet. The rest of us seem to dodge around the problem. We think somebody will invent a miracle technology that will save the day. Or we play carbon trading and offset games, shuffling around the deck chairs on the global Titanic. Or we lamely point fingers at China and India, billions of people who, compared to North America’s mere millions, have nearly no responsibility for climate change. But there’s no getting around the central truth: If we are to avoid cataclysmic and runaway global warming, we, here in North America, right here in Nova Scotia, have to make very drastic and very quick reductions in our greenhouse gas emissions. This truth is not controversial. The 2001 Climate Change Action Plan agreed to by the New England governors and eastern Canadian premiers (including Nova Scotia’s) reviewed the scientific literature and called for a10 percent reduction from 1990 levels of GHG emissions by 2020, with a further long-term cut of between 75 and 85 percent.Other jurisdictions around the world use similar targets, naming the year 2050 as the target date for long-term cuts of 75-80 percent in GHG emissions. But how, exactly, are we going to reduce Nova Scotia’s GHG emissions by such amounts? Are we up to the global warming challenge?According to Environment Canada, in 2004 Nova Scotia emitted 23 million tonnes of GHG—or roughly 24 tonnes of GHG per person. That’s about a 16 percent increase over our 1990 emissions of 19.7 million tonnes. If we are to achieve an 85 percent cut from 1990 levels, the per capita annual cut must be over 17 tonnes.Rick Mercer’s One Tonne Challenge, which was given up as overly ambitious, looks pathetically weak in contrast.Likewise, replacing traditional light bulbs with compact fluorescent light is a worthwhile project, but it doesn’t do much in the overall scheme of things. If we replaced all light bulbs in the province tonight, we’d see a drop in GHG emissions of less than one percent. If we did nothing else, by the end of the year that reduction would be cancelled out by emission increases in everything else we do.Earlier this year Mark Parent, the provincial minister of the environment, announced a series of initiatives, including a reiteration of the GHG emission reduction goal of 10 percent from 1990 levels by 2020.Its challenging, but doable,” says Parent. “If you set goals that are too low, people say youre not doing enough, but if you aim too high they say youre doing it for political reasons.”Parent, however, is aware that his announced goals fall well short of what is needed. He says he has read the recent best-seller Heat: How to Stop the Planet from Burning, by George Monbiot, a columnist with the English newspaper The Guardian. That book (which inspired this article) calls for Britain to achieve a 90 percent reduction in GHG emissions by 2030. The Canadian target, says Monbiot, should be 94 percent by 2030.”When you look at the global challenge—Monbiot says 90 percent, others say 70 percent. So, 10 percent isnt enough, but in the Canadian scheme of things, it puts us in the lead, says Parent If the federal government goes higher, well raise our targets too.”Parents announcement was greeted warmly by environmentalists as a good first step, but if were going to make GHG emission cuts of the size needed—75 to 90 percent—we need to start restructuring our society now, says Larry Hughes, head of the Energy Research Group at Dalhousie.”We should have started down this road during the national energy crises in the 1970s,” says Hughes. “It takes decades to put these things in place.”Hughes primary work has been around energy security issues, but his research provides some possible solutions to the global warming challenge.Climate change is real, and by far the larger issue, he says. But energy security will be an issue even sooner.Hughes points out that the vast majority of Nova Scotias fuels are imported, mostly from unstable countries, and that the province is vulnerable to price hikes and supply disruptions. Even oil and natural gas from Alberta cant make it to the Maritimes, as pipelines dont extend past Quebec City.Instead of using imported fuel, says Hughes, Nova Scotia should concentrate on developing indigenous and renewable sources of energy. While his work is aimed at the energy security issue, it turns out the same arguments hold for reducing GHG emissions: finding and using renewable sources of energy solves both problems. Source: 2004 data from Natural Resources Canada, with Pollution Watch compilation of Environment Canada data for power plant emissions..Home warm homeIn a paper published in February, “Review, Reduce, and Replace: The three “Rs of energy security, Hughes takes a look at Nova Scotia’s overall energy demand. He suggests we could, through a combination of increased efficiency and use of renewable fuels, cut our reliance on fossil fuels for residential space and water heating by about 75 percent. The same strategies would also work for industrial and commercial heating needs.Fuel oil and propane burned for residential space and water heating account for about 1.2 million tonnes worth of GHG emissions in Nova Scotia. We don’t know the exact number, but probably that much again comes from generating electricity used in baseboard heating and electric water heaters. Hughes suggests we can reduce the energy demands, and therefore the GHG emissions, as follows:Reduction: We’ll return to this in a bit, but Hughes says constructing new buildings to a higher standard and retrofitting old buildings for increased efficiency can result in an energy savings of one percent per year. That strategy will bring energy demands down by 17 percent by 2025.Solar energy: Simply orienting new buildings on an east-west axis and taking advantage of their southern exposure goes a long way towards reducing heating needs. Couple that with solar water heating in new and existing buildings, and Hughes says we can make a further energy reduction of 15 percent.Wind energy: Nova Scotia has immense wind potential, and the technology for using wind for heating purposes has existed since the 1940s, through a process called Electric Thermal Storage. With ETS, electricity is used to heat ceramic blocks in the basement, which then release the heat as needed, for as long as 10 days. ETS systems are priced comparably to oil furnaces.ETS systems can be powered with sometimes erratic and unpredictable wind generators: when the wind blows, the systems are charged. Nova Scotia power would use basic computer technology to deliver energy generated by thousands of windmills distributed around the province to the individual houses most in need of an ETS recharge.Because the ETS systems store heat so long, a lack of wind hardly ever becomes a problem—for a study of heating needs on Prince Edward Island, Hughes found that ETS systems would need backup electricity sources for less than one percent of their power needs.Applying wind power for heating across the province could reduce the need for non-renewable energy for residential heating by an additional 30 percent, says Hughes.District heating: Scandinavian countries make wide use of district heating, a system of using waste heat from power plants to heat nearby houses. Heated, pressurized water is sent through super-insulated pipes, which residents tap through heat exchangers (also comparable in price to furnaces).Hughes notes that the Tufts Cove power plant is about 30 percent efficient, meaning that 70 percent of the potential energy of the plant is simply dumped into Halifax Harbour as waste heat. That is enough energy, he suggests, to heat every residential unit on the Halifax peninsula.Installing the piping for such a system would cost the same as pursuing current plans to install natural gas lines around the peninsula. But, says Hughes, provincial supplies of natural gas are limited, North American fields have already peaked and importing natural gas from countries such as Russia leaves the province vulnerable to supply disruptions. Anyway, why dont we just burn the natural gas in the power plant, and improve efficiency?” he asks.Using district heating just in Halifax (the potential exists for Sydney as well) can decrease the provincial demand for residential energy by about another five percent province-wide.Biomass: Because much of the market is informal, we dont know exactly how much wood is being used for heating in Nova Scotia. Hughes guesses that its meeting about 10 percent of our present heating demands, and can be doubled by 2025.Hughes is visibly frustrated at the bureaucratic indifference, and even hostility, to implementing a sensible energy policy. District and wind-generated heating are existing technologies, but putting them in place means stretching traditional power generation in new ways. “Nova Scotia Power wont do it unless the government pays for it, he says. It doesnt make sense—theyll make money on this.Likewise, Halifax’s much ballyhooed regional plan doesn’t require builders to orient new buildings to take advantage of passive solar opportunities.Pass the gasAnd, says Hughes, there’s an irrational obsession with natural gas in Nova Scotia. I really dont understand it. Its like they have to justify their past bad decisions by chasing this thing. But ask them where theyre going to get the natural gas. They want to build this infrastructure for offshore supplies that will last maybe a decade. Its wasted time, and wasted investment that could be spent on a long-term solution.Waste not, want notThe frustration with bureaucratic inertia is something Brendan Haley knows well.By 2050, well need an 80 to 90 percent reduction in GHG, and we can’t get there if we build a bunch of inefficient houses in the next few years, says Haley, energy coordinator at the Ecology Action Centre. The province recently announced that new construction must meet Energuide80 efficiency standards—by 2011. Thats totally inadequate,” says Haley. “We can go to Energuide80 in a year—this isnt new or hi-tech technology, its been around since the 1970s. We cant afford to have inefficient houses being built. The number one way to cut greenhouse gases, he continues, is to invest in energy efficiency. And yet, there’s no provincial energy efficiency plan.To Haley, its a simple equation: “We should invest in efficiency if its cheaper than building power plants and burning fossil fuels. This year, Nova Scotia will spend just 0 million on a handful of energy efficiency programs. But if the province adopted California best practices—directing five percent of utility revenue into efficiency efforts—some 0 million annually would become available. With that kind of money, wed hire an army of auditors and contractors to go into peoples homes and see what needs to be done, says Haley. Theyd come up with financing plans and incentives, and the retrofitting work would be paid for through the efficiency fund and customer spending.”As public works projects go, thats a pretty good one. Thousands of people are put to work, and thousands more save money on their monthly utility bills. And its also a pretty good plan for reducing GHG emissions. Retrofitting houses results in tremendous energy savings—and, therefore, cuts in future GHG emissions. Just for electricity, efficiency improvements alone can result in 600 megawatts in savings by 2020, says Haley. Thats more than 25 percent of Nova Scotias current electrical capacity of 2,243 megawatts, most of it produced with high GHG-emitting coal plants. All together, Haley thinks that efficiency improvements can cut energy use between 30 and 40 percent, and thered be similar reductions in GHG emissions.Until last month, provincial and Nova Scotia Power officials rejected out of hand environmentalists suggestion of an energy efficiency surcharge on power bills. But in May the company made an about-face and shocked observers by calling for matching the California standard. What happened?”We finally got them to do an economic analysis of energy efficiency that looked 20 years out,” says Haley. “And of course they found that its totally economical. The people at the utility finally realized it and said, We have to do this.’The proposal still has to be approved by the Utility Review Board, and theres ambiguity about the details. “Whos going to run the fund? asks Haley. What type of public oversight will there be? Whos going to do the evaluation? We havent been supportive of Nova Scotia Power running the program. Wed like to see third-party advisors making decisions, and stakeholders on a management board. We want targets and penalties for not meeting them.”We dont want people saying 10 years from now, See, this doesn’t work.’And then theres the matter of political support for starting the program.”People dont want to see an energy efficiency surcharge on their power bill, says Haley. They think they shouldnt have to pay for someone else to save money.”But such thinking misses the point: energy efficiency reduces the need for more power plants, and so serves to lower the cost of electricity for everyone. True, theres a line on the bill that wasnt there before, but the rest of the bill is lower as a result.Blowin in the windElectrical generation through the five Nova Scotia Power generating plants was responsible for 10.6 million tonnes of GHG emissions in 2004, or 46 percent of the total for the province. So while savings through efficiency, even of 30 percent, are important, we need much more if we are to reach the necessary overall GHG reductions of 75, 85 or 90 percent. As part of his environmental policy initiative, Parent announced that by 2020 Nova Scotia would generate 18.5 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. Currently, about 10 percent of electricity comes from renewableslink

In vices, the very essence of crime – that is, the design to injure the person or property of another – is wanting. It is as absurd as it would be to declare truth to be a falsehood, or falsehood truth.Lysander Spooner, Vices Are Not Crimes: A Vindication Of Moral LibertySix months ago, an unjustified SWAT raid on the Scottsdale, Arizona home of Salvador and Carlota Celaya resulted in a fire that deprived the elderly couple of all their earthly possessions. At the beginning of the raid, SWAT operators threw a flash-bang device – a grenade that carries a potentially lethal charge, and has incendiary effects – into a bedroom. In this case, the target – the criminal suspect – wasn’t on the premises. One would think that the heroes of the SWAT team – swaddled in protective armor, bearing ballistic shields, and packing very large caliber weapons – would be able to withstand such a withering barrage from a small-caliber weapon and be able to subdue a confused 73-year-old man without killing him or destroying his home. “It’s not the wrong house, and it’s a very serious criminal that we’re after.” Well, that “very serious criminal” wasn’t there, and neither were any of the stolen items – including ,000 in cash, consumer electronics, a pit bull, and rims from a Cadillac Escalade, at least some of which would have survived a fire – that were listed on the search warrant. The Celayas are preparing to sue the city for 50,000, which most likely means that the local taxpayers – rather than the guilty officials – will pay for the crime committed against that family. Meanwhile, elsewhere in Arizona, another elderly individual – 83-year-old Phil Cisneros – faces a life sentence in prison as a result of a personal vice that shouldn’t be punished as a crime. According to Flores, her office has actually exercised clemency by “forgiving” one of Cisneros’s prior convictions and imprisoning him for merely three years – which is to say, for life: “[H]e took off for eight and a half years. Duber’s reaction when told that Cisneros suffers from several terminal afflictions displays a similar human touch: “The entire jail system is full of people who have very bad health problems.” Like Phil Cisneros, my father is 83 years old, and like myself he doesn’t drink, smoke, or engage in any similar vices (although both of us have a weakness for soda, which is a much bigger health risk than, say, smoking marijuana, something I neither do nor recommend). But the death sentence Duber inflicted on Phil Cisneros was an act of aggression against someone whose behavior – once the key distinctions are understood – was a vice, not a crime. The assumption here is that people who occasionally become intoxicated on alcohol cannot be trusted to operate their own cars – just as it’s supposedly just to deprive Phil Cisneros of what little time he has left to enjoy the company of his grandchildren and terminally ill wife because of a nine-year-old DUI conviction.

The urge to merge: Hit #52

Array Antoine Roquentin resolves in his mind the raging debate that has supplied the underlying conflict throughout: Do things exist? On page 181 he narrates, “…nothingness was only an idea in my head, an existing idea floating in this immensity: this nothingness had not come before existence, it was an existence like any other and appeared after many others.”This revelation makes him crazy mad.

This offer represents a 163% premium over my average cost of 0.4/shareThis deal comes after a minor lull following last year’s 2 multi-billion dollar deals, one of which featured United Health as a buyer! As a shareholder I like this deal, but as someone who has seen his premium go up (though still covering nothing at times!), this is not exactly welcome. Infact, except for the top 3, United Health, Wellpoint and Aetna, everyone is an eventual target. The smaller players include Humana (HUM), Wellcare Health (WCG), HealthNet (HNT), Cigna (CI), Sierra Health (SIE), Molina Healthcare (MOH), Assurant (AIZ), Amerigroup (AGP), Centene (CNC).

Studies on the economics of nuclear power over the past few years routinely ignore baseline subsidies (worth 0.8-4.2 c/kWh) to nuclear in their calculations of economic viability of the technology. I’m still not convinced that nuclear power is the best answer for addressing climate change, but I’d rather open this up to more informed parties to discuss the implications of Earth Talks’ claims.Categories: nuclear power, subsidies, USA

Robert Oppenheimer, the Doctor Atomic of John Adam’s opera. The author of 109 East Palace is Jennet Conant, the granddaughter of former Harvard president and chief administrator of the Manhattan Project James B. The book doesn’t set out to be another academic study of Oppenheimer (right) and the development of the bombs. After reading the Rig-Veda Beethoven wrote “God is immaterial and transcends every conception”.) On the night before the first atomic test at the Trinity site Oppenheimer quoted this stanza from the Bhagavad Gita:In battle, in forest, at the precipice in the mountain,On the dark great sea, in the midst of javelins and arrows,In sleep, in confusion, in the depths of shame,The good deeds a man has done before defend himAnd after the first successful test explosion which confirmed the horrendous destructive power created by his team he quoted the lines where Vishnu tries to persuade the Prince to do his duty and take on his multi-armoured form:If the radiance of a thousand sunsWere to burst at once into the sky,That would be like the splendor of the Mighty One…I am become Death,The shatterer of WorldsRobert Oppenheimer was a brilliant scientist and intellectual. The political paths he continued to explore when working on the atomic bomb, and the doubts he later developed about the ethics of the develoment of the hydrogen bomb were used at the Gray Board hearings to categorise him as a security risk, and he lived out his final years as a marginalised figure. His treatment was a puzzling contrast to that handed out to scientists with proven Nazi connections. The film flopped at the box-office.109 East Palace does not set out to be a biography of Robert Oppenheimer, or a detailed study of the Manhattan Project. The literature of the project is already very rich, with books such as Gregg Herken’s extraordinarily well researched, detailed and virtually unreadable Brotherhood of the Bomb shortly to be joined by a new life of Oppenheimer from the late Abraham Pais. 109 East Palace by Jennet Conant is published by Simon & Schuster ISBN 0-7432-5007-9Los Alamos continues as a National Laboratory involved with nuclear weapons, and other activities. Visit the facility via this link There are some excellent photos of Los Alamos and the test site, plus coverage of Doctor Atomic on New Yorker music critic, and fellow blogger, Alex Ross’ web site.International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) is a non-partisan international grouping of medical organisations dedicated to the abolition of nuclear weapons. This is a live recording made at the March 2005 ‘Nuclear Weapons Inheritance Project’ which mixes readings in German from a range of authors including Robert Oppenheimer, Enrico Fermi, Albert Einstein and Sadako Kurihara with relevent music including the aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Shostakovich’s String Quartet No 8 and Schubert’s Quartettsatz. I was surprised, however, that few of these eulogies mentioned his book The Age of Discontinuity, a prophetic work that speaks directly to today’s business headlines and economic anxieties.Mr. Drucker wrote The Age of Discontinuity in the late 1960’s, a time when most people assumed that the big corporations of the day, companies like General Motors and U.S. Steel, would dominate the economy for the foreseeable future. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss: why does it matter if the list of leading corporations turns over every couple of decades, as long as the total number of jobs continues to grow? The answer is the reason Mr. Drucker’s old book is so relevant to today’s headlines: corporations can’t provide their workers with economic security if the companies’ own future is highly insecure.American workers at big companies used to think they had made a deal. And that stability - along with any semblance of economic security for many workers - is now gone.Regular readers of this column know what I think we should do: instead of trying to provide economic security through the back door, via tax breaks designed to encourage corporations to provide health care and pensions, we should provide it through the front door, starting with national health insurance.

Day 85 to Infinity: My story Part III

September 25th, 2008 by admin

Array-ne

The following words were written nearly two years ago, but somehow seem to resonate even more now than they did at the time they were written. To wit:Sorry. Im about as good at keeping committments to myself as I am with keeping in contact with friends and family that arent directly in my line of sight each day. It has been well over a month since my last entry, and much has happened- many things that are exciting, many things that anger me, hopes for the future, longing for the past, and yet it all adds up to a general sense of anxiety coupled with the gripping weight of desperation and ennui. I hope to summarily and inadequately recount these events in the near future, but I feel a duty to finish my thoughts on my trip to New York, which, although essentially uneventful, seems important to wrap up, since it is the case that I almost never finish any writing project that I set out on.And so, as history continues to repeat itself, the continuation of a story recounted by countless people on countless occasions, in countless times, cities, countries, lifetimes. Just filling in the ever-expanding gaps, if only until this too dissolves and requires one more recollection in another time, place, to fill space and accrue validation for the seeker. And on and on…We eventually found the right train and made our way back to 67th and Colombus. Turning the corner, we saw a huge line of people, and there were two minutes left on the clock. I suppose we made it just in time. Or were we two minutes too late? Regardless, we walked the half block to the end of the line. Two production assistants were checking people in, and promptly asked if I was there to audition. Two other fellows meandered up behind Rebecca and I and waited for their turn to be checked off the list. Just then, the P.A.s made an announcement to the newcomers that they were all filled up, making me the last person in line. Is this a good twist of fate, or a portent of doom?I took it as a good sign, especially since I still had forms to fill out for the audition. One of the questions was, What would Meredith Viera find most interesting about you? This was a question I was confounded over. How am I supposed to know? I dont really care about her life, and I just naturally assumed she wouldnt care about mine. So, my response was that the Millionaire line was the longest one Id ever been in, which turns out not to be true, as I waited in line with my sister and her friends for hours when I was in fourth grade to get New Kids on the Block tickets.Nonetheless, it wouldnt matter in the long run since I would go on to fail the qualifying exam to get onto the show. The test was thirty questions in ten minutes, and I knew in the first two minutes that I was doomed. It turns out that the central reason for going to New York was the most negligible, inconsequential aspect of the journey. I was happy to get out of there so quickly, actually. The atmosphere in the testing room had the distinct feel of school, and I was instantly out of my element and anxious to leave. Not to mention that Rebecca had left me at the door and was now wandering around the city by herself, which made me inexplicably uncomfortable. On the way into the testing room, a flamboyantly gay man who cut in front of me in line was proudly strutting with our sheeplike herd, which incidentally was paraded around nearly a whole city block before being admitted into the building, gleefully announcing to the total world of strangers around him and across the street that he was auditioning for Millionaire. I hung my head in shame.Surrounding me in the testing room was a true melting pot. Every type of person imaginable, save the Brown University dyke type, the anarcho-punk (my personal favorite), and the anarcho-hippie (my least favorite). I was definitely one of the younger ones in the melange. I was seated at a table with all men, who ranged in age from 25-60. Directly across from me was a portly- well, why mince words- a fat, balding man with vibrato to spare. An insecure joker, he tried to lighten an already casual and [the networks idea of a] fun, loose atmosphere- complete with late twentysomething test proctors and various other hip looking P.A.s. He made funny quips and asides in between every sentence the proctor spoke. He raised his hand and asked one of those funny because the answer is obvious questions. At the end of the test, his wit and charm proved no match to his utter inability to pass the test, just like the other 85 out of 100 people that didnt, myself included. On the table were official Who Wants to be a Millionaire? pencils that we all took the test with. Most everyone around me that failed the test were palming their pencils or putting them in their bags as a small memento of yet another failure in their lives, and I followed suit.As we shuffled out amidst post-test banter about the Missy Elliot question and who led the Zapatistas, the fat man, however, grabbed every spare pencil from each table he passed. At last glance, he must have had at least twelve of these things, and he stealthily stashed them in his fake designer shoulder bag.As we exited the building, a woman near me asked simple directions to a nearby street, to which I responded that I wasnt from New York. She said, Me neither, and continued to look at me in earnest. So, I gave her directions that I found out not five minutes later were completely wrong. Oh well. I walked up the street to a Starbucks that Rebecca had gotten coffee at earlier, thinking she may have taken refuge in the only place vaguely familiar to her. Not finding her there, I waited for the restroom to free up so I could crap, which, although I didnt really feel the need to do, I liked the idea of a free restroom in the middle of the city, and the fact that it was Starbucks was the crown jewel in the equation. I made sure to pee on the wall and floor before I sat on the toilet._______I turned the corner and gathered my bearings. I fished a wadded piece of paper out of my pocket and found the nearest pay phone, which turned out to be about a block away, strangely. I had Rebeccas calling card number, and I needed to use it to call her cell phone so we could meet up. I dialed the number, and glancing at the PIN number on the paper, something seemed wrong. Then I remembered- days earlier, as we were traveling, she had at some point rattled off the PIN in the midst of a conversation. I couldnt believe it, but I actually remembered that part of the PIN had four twos in it, and the piece of paper that she had written the number down on for me only contained three.I marvelled at my remarkable listening and memory skills, and said a quiet, Fuck yeah, as I grinned to myself and dialed Rebeccas cell phone. As the line clicked to connect, I glanced around at my surroundings, yknow, like you do when youre on a payphone. A single moment between daily dealings when one is at rest, when one can take in the world around them and observe the chaos with which they are involved. Or to see if youre about to get mugged. Either one. Probably both.Crazily, fatefully, my eyes instantly fell directly on Rebecca, half a block away and across a major intersection, walking perpendicularly to my line of vision, out of the possible hundreds in my line of sight. An audible gasp hit the back of my throat. I slammed the phone down and raced along the busy sidewalk, yknow, as one sees in the city sometimes and wonders, Where the fuck are they going in such a hurry? or Whatd he do? Whats he running from?I thought about this as I zipped around professionals and professional transients. I always thought people ran through the city to get to an important meeting or class or court date, but as I ran through the crosswalk and hurried up behind Rebecca and slipped my hand through her pocketed arm, I realized that nine times out of ten its probably for a girl. I couldnt believe I found my girlfriend in the middle of Manhattan by sheer sight alone. She kissed me and we walked around the city, past Central Park again, and eventually, we found our way back to the subway where we boarded the train to Jersey and returned to our hotel to clean up.

Why the Rothschilds cornered the market on gold is to PREVENT ANY NATION FROM RETURNING TO THE GOLD STANDARD. Germany was a holdout–and you see what happened to it following WWI.What we have unfolding before our eyes is an evil, literaly satanic master plan that has been continuously followed for 50-100 years, and now is reaching fruition, barring our intervention that results in a ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT, or GLOBAL FEDERATION, and the complete loss of any rights whatsoever.David Rockefeller or a Rothschild will be the tsar. This plan was designed probably by Nathan Rothschild, and has been stopped by the financial health of America.

Some parents reported as many as 5 school age children out of school. The majority of parents attributed the absence of their children from education to a lack of school fees. Many sad stories told the human side of these statistics, especially for the girl-child for whom education in a school is considered by many as a luxury.Zambia has signed on to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Education for All action plan and the Millennium Development Goals all of which call for the realisation of universal primary education.Petrauskis and Nkunika make the necessary recommendation, therefore, that some very positive action must be taken to deal with the indirect costs of education that are so burdensome to poor families, even as direct costs may have been eliminated or lessened. An expansion by the Ministry of Education of its bursary programme is called for to ensure that poor or vulnerable households have access to sufficient resources to provide uniforms, transportation, lunches, etc.Another recommendation of the report is that the Ministry of Education should assure that the guidelines are strictly enforced so that no child is sent away from primary education on account of being unable to pay any fee (whether Project or PTA) or not having a school uniform. But this will also require that the Ministry of Education should allocate proportionately higher grants to schools serving poorer communities, so that the necessary funds can be available for recurring operation expenses and rehabilitative projects. An obvious need to be met in order to advance both the accessibility and quality of education in Zambia is the improvement of conditions of service of teachers.Surely teachers should be able to meet the demands of the JCTR Basic Needs Basket if we are to expect them to give their best in educating children.Yes, education is costly, even free education!

This time I only ditched another 1.4kg, but the visible difference was quite astonishing. You can see my challenge photos on my BFL site, if you’re interested. The thing that most surprised me about my challenges was the impact of the ‘warm & fuzzy’ stuff that I’d thought was really corny at first. Over the past couple of years, I’ve made some great friends through BFL, and have received all kinds of help, advice, and even some material things, which I never expected.So-o-o…..from there I muddled along, living my new healthy lifestyle, hanging out at the gym, studying for my gym instructor’s certificate, and then my personal trainer qualification.

Deixo à vossa consideração as respostas.

Words, words, words: Heh. Busted?

Based on the performance of technology stocks today, you’d think the world’s going back to the abacus.Tech stocks were crushed as the impact of the slowdown has finally hit guidance.  It gave a clear Sell signal today, as investors abandoned the market leadership with extreme prejudice.  Though price held up OK today, the NYSE unfortunately makes a much clearer case for a double top.                                                                                   Interestingly, of the seven tech subindexes, Telecom continues to hang in there, and actually closed higher today. The SOX has been the tech laggard, and as so often is the case, laggards get hit the hardest.  The XAU failed at its 200-day as well.  Commodity investors have little sympathy for today’s tech victims.  Meanwhile, the RLX hit a new all-time high today while tech imploded.  Housing data was at it’s strongest in almost a year, which corroborates the strong consumer discretionary action today.  The BTK held up OK, but Drugs notched their 5th straight gain today.  The hard selling in the IBD100 today was a new and bearish development.  That changed today, and it’s worth noting.  Also, I’m not happy that the SMA TOF Ratio slipped to a Sell either.  Throw in today’s distribution day, and the signs point to caution.Until tomorrow, have a great night.bestdk

Brandon Wright lead the charge with 17 points on only 10 shots for a 1.49 ppws to go along with his colossal 4 blocks in only 29 minutes of play. The ‘Cats of Northwestern didn’t help the over on this one, as they could only muster 41 points in a 62 possession game against the Buckeyes’ 73 points (1.19 ppp). It should be noted that NU’s most proficient scorer, Kevin Coble was again out last night with an ankle (thank you Al Michaels!!!).On the bright side, NU actually improved on the defensive glass, only allowing 35% of offensive rebounding chances to succeed compared to their season average of 40%.Florida St. put a stop to Virginia Tech’s hotness by holding serve at home despite getting out shot (61% efg vs.

Those who committed to the whole thing started at 9:00 in the morning, did a massive 84 checkpoint alleycat, and then spent the nighttime hours spinning on trainers at a warehouse space downtown.I showed up there about 9:00 at night and hung around drinking beer, taking short rides around the waterfront, and marveling at the stamina of those who were participating in the full event.At one point, a group of us went on a mission to liberate construction tape and orange roadwork cones in order to set up a phony “velvet rope” outside the warehouse space. It was fun engaging in a bit of rather harmless petty vandalism, especially trying to ride my bike down the street, slightly inebriated, carrying a plastic cone lifted from a new building site.I also rode around the new sculpture garden a few times;

Numerous technical studies describe or review sauropod hands and feet, with the most useful works being Christiansen (1997), Bonnan (2001, 2003, 2005) and Apesteguía (2005).The basicsLet’s note to begin with that sauropod hands and feet were only very superficially like those of elephants, and in fact in several details were fundamentally different. I know that many skeletal mounts give the animals multiple claws on the hands and/or feet, but that’s because the mounts are inaccurate, outdated composites.I should note here that the following discussion applies only to members of Eusauropoda, given that it now seems that basal sauropods outside of Eusauropoda lacked the distinctive hands and feet of the better known, fully graviportal sauropods. The metacarpal colonnadeAs noted, the eusauropod hand is formed from a columnar arcade of five vertically arranged metacarpals. In forms with large pollex claws (like diplodocoids), the anatomy of the penultimate phalanx and the distal end of the first metacarpal indicates that some flexion and extension of the claw was possible: in other words, these sauropods could both lift and lower their claws (albeit not by much compared to what was possible in other dinosaurs). What did sauropods do with this lone thumb claw? We know that brachiosaurids such as Brachiosaurus possessed a short, small thumb claw, but Lower Cretaceous trackways apparently produced by other brachiosaurids indicate that the thumb claw was absent in these forms (it’s been suggested that the thumb claw was still present in these forms, but that it was so small that it failed to leave an impression. These authors proposed that at least some sauropods had spiky skin covering the distal end of the metacarpus, though how widespread this was among sauropods we don’t know.Banana-shaped first metacarpals: why? While all five metacarpals in most eusauropods were more or less straight and parallel, this was not true of some titanosaurs. Apesteguía (2005) made the intriguing suggestion that the bowed first metacarpal may first have evolved in claw-bearing basal titanosaurs in order to help support the claw, that it was then later retained when the claw was lost, and that it was later reversed (back to the straight condition) in derived lithostrotian titanosaurs. This raises the question as to why a bowed first metacarpal was needed ‘to help support the claw’ however, given that other sauropods with thumb claws had straight, rather than bowed, first metacarpals.

On the GOP side, state Sen. Michele Bachmann, state Rep. Jim Knoblach, and state Rep. Phil Krinkie are the serious contenders for the nomination. Dawn Gibbons, a state Assemblywoman, is facing Secretary of State Dean Heller and state Assemblywoman Sharron Angle in the August 15 Republican primary. Democrats are hoping strong performances from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D) and state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer (D) at the top of the ticket will boost down-ballot congressional races like this one.In a neutral environment, these races would be Democratic long shots and Roskam and Gard are particularly strong candidates. Democrats still have almost two-dozen better opportunities, so if the battle for the majority is being fought in these open seats, Democrats may have enough seats in play to win.The June election result in California 50 will signal one of two extremes: 1) The Democratic wave is potentially weaker and further away than we thought, or 2) The Democratic wave is real and already sweeping normally Republican districts into the Democratic column. This column first appeared on Town Hall on April 14, 2006.

In 1996, Bob Dole carried the district 55% to 45% while losing statewide 51% to 38%.In the 1998 governor’s race, Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA) defeated Gray Davis (D) 52% to 48% in the district (he lost statewide 58% to 39%), and four years later, GOP nominee Bill Simon lost statewide (47% to 42%) but defeated Gov. Davis 56% to 37% in the 50th C.D.The best performance by a Democrat in the district appears to be Sen. Dianne Feinstein back in 2000, when she won the district 48% to 45%, while winning statewide 56% to 37% and out-spending her Republican opponent 0.3 million to .3 million. But in a one-on-one race in June, 48% won’t be enough for Busby and the Democrats to take the seat. This item first appeared on Political Wire on April 13, 2006.
