In the months following the death of John Paul, television studios rushed to be the first to produce a film about his life. There was also the inflated hype over a bio-pic by Mel Gibson, after rumors were circulated that he had sent a crew to film the funeral. The first film to be completed was actually an Italian movie, produced by Taudue Films, entitled Karol: a Man who became Pope. Directed by Giacomo Battiato, it told the story of Karol Wojtyla’s younger years under Nazi occupation, then as a priest and bishop. The film ends with his election to the papacy, actually using TV footage of the real pope’s speech to the people of Rome. The movie had been started before his death, and completed shortly after. The second TV movie I came across was a film, simply titled Pope John Paul II,(available on DVD from CBS, 0) starring Jon Voight and Cary Elwes (as the older and younger Wojtyla, respectively.) This film spanned his entire life, starting at roughly the same time period as Karol. Following the death of John Paul, the makers of Karol decided to complete the story and film his papacy, in a movie called Karol: the Pope, the Man.(The complete miniseries is available in Canada on DVD August 4th for about 0.) Taking up where the previous film left off, it documents his struggle against communism (he visited Poland twice before its collapse, and once immediately after,) as well as pivotal moments of his papacy (such as the assassination attempt.) The film also documents several other prominent Catholics and their relations with John Paul, including Archbishop Oscar Romero, Polish priest and martyr Jerzy Popieluszko, and Mother Teresa, in subplots intertwined with the main story. The Karol miniseries is undoubtably the finer of the two films. Perhaps its greatest strength is the believability of Piotr Adamczyk, a 34-year-old Polish actor who carries the role of Pope John Paul to perfection. Unlike the other film, this one actor (who presumably didn’t expect to make an entire second film under old-age makeup) makes Karol endearing, courageous, funny - he simply brings to life this Pope we all had a connection with. You feel you’ve known the guy your whole life. Where the Voight film supercedes Karol is in its attention to historical details. For instance, the writers of Karol found it necessary to invent a main character, one Father Tomasz Zaleski, who I think is a composite character. In the words of George Weigel, he was a complete invention

Array Therefore, CDS’s retreatfrom the overlapping territory prior to the close of the testimony period iseffective in eliminating an area of potential likelihood of confusion.Once the Board determined that CDS had met the jurisdictional requirements for commencing a concurrent use proceeding, it went on to determine what territory was appropriate for the parties.ICED as the registrant and [presumptively] prior user “is entitled to a registration covering the entire United States, including areas of its use and nonuse, subject only to the exception of geographic areas where the junior user can prove prior use. Here, too, in the context of a concurrent use proceeding, and because of our view that advertising on the Internet does not automatically preclude concurrent use registration, we find that the presence of a disclaimer on CDS’s website is likewise helpful in avoiding confusion in this case. Therefore, we conclude that the specific evidence of the parties’ simultaneous use on the Internet in this case does not require us to find that there is a likelihood of confusion. As to the effect of the Internet on concurrent use proceedings, John writes that the Board answered the question raised last year in the HUBCAP HEAVEN case [not citable as precedent], TTABlogged here.

Rewarding Failure and Incompetence:Outside of airport security screener, UQ knows of no instances of firings or reprimands issued as a result of 9/11 events. This despite the obvious failure of intelligence and air defenses, which, given the warnings received implies at the very least gross incompetence, egregious negligence if not worse. Rather than holding responsible individuals directly accountable, and insisting upon answers, we are instead rushing ahead and rewarding them with rich financial bonuses and budget increases. This comes on the heels of Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld pre-9/11 confirmation in Congressional testimony that the Department of Defense had undocumentable ‘adjustments’ (ie. money unaccounted for) of .3 trillion. For comparison, the total federal outlay in the 2002 budget comes to just over trillion. This staggering figure demands that we seek full disclosure of what’s happened to taxpayer funds. Why are we throwing good money after bad without holding any one accountable for the worst breach of national security in history? The Real Deal on 9:11: Rewarding Failure; Catherine Austin Fitts, Issue #2, Global Outlook magazine, published by www.globalresearch.ca.http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/HL0205/S00173.htmNot Important?
US Ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, told Congress that the US has reason to be optimistic: Americans should be strategically optimistic about Iraq, even as the continuing difficulties in Iraq will require tactical patience, said Khalilzad, appearing before the US Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee. The envoy hailed various positive developments which give the Iraqi government and friends of Iraq real hope, particularly in the political arena.Political progress that has been made in Iraq has created opportunities and put Iraq on the right trajectory, he said.Khalilzad cited a tectonic shift among Iraq’s Sunni community, which, after months of boycotting the postwar political process, is now actively involved. He also noted Iraq’s successful elections and the formation of the country’s national unity government earlier this year.

STILL GOINGMedia Elites Pound KSFO’s Morgan Over Comments Nearly two weeks after KSFO / San Francisco morning talker Melanie Morgan called for New York Times Editor Bill Keller’s potential execution if both charged and found guilty of treason, the liberal press backlash continues.Mainstream media elitists have since made Morgan the poster child for their new crusade against bullies who are unfairly out to get them. Like the Energizer Bunny, their outrage just keeps going and going and going. Is it nothing more than a transparent attempt to deflect from their own recent questionable behavior? Not often mentioned by these victims, of course, is the fact that Keller’s paper kicked off the entire controversy in the first place, by reporting on what was supposed to be a secret program to investigate terrorism financing. Since then, conservatives, the White House and congressional representatives have sharply criticized the Times for its lack of discretion. And sure enough, Morgan had the honor of being selected as Keith Olbermann’s Worst Person In The World, shortly after making the comment on another MSNBC show.Morgan says her statements have since been twisted by partisan opponents. On FOX’s Hannity & Colmes show, she recently made the case. And in Melanie’s own words, this is from WorldNetDaily:The producers for the MSNBC news program Hardball with Chris Matthews had asked me to come on their show to discuss the leaking of classified anti- terrorism programs by the New York Times.I made it clear with my very first words that I saw this as a case of treason. Yes, for those of you in the cut and run crowd, I said TREASON.Matthews was shocked. He seemed to think he misunderstood me. I couldn’t have really meant that, could I? Long prison sentences for reporters because they repeatedly leaked classified information on America’s efforts to combat terrorism?Absolutely.Since my comments on Monday, a growing chorus of patriotic Americans have joined in the call for prosecution of the New York Times for committing treason.New York Times editor Bill Keller and his accomplices should face prosecution by the government of the United States for willfully and repeatedly undermining the war effort against terrorism by repeatedly violating the law and reporting on classified anti-terrorism programs. For those with short memories, the New York Times pulled the same stunt in December of last year when it exposed the terrorist wiretapping program to the world under the sensational headline, Bush Lets U.S. Spy on Callers Without Courts. In each of the cases where the New York Times leaked information on our efforts to battle America’s enemies, the Bush administration made pleas for the Times not to publish the stories. After the Hardball visit, Morgan was quickly slammed by the American Prospect, a liberal website:RIGHT WING TALK SHOW HOST WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH KELLER BEING SENT TO THE GAS CHAMBER.According to this morning’s San Francisco Chronicle, conservative talk show host Melanie Morgan of KSFO-FM said she’d have no problem if Bill Keller were executed for publishing the big Times piece on the U.S.’s secret financial surveillance program. From the Chronicle:San Francisco talk show host Melanie Morgan believes that Times editor Bill Keller should be jailed for treason for approving the publication. The maximum penalty for treason is death. If he were to be tried and convicted of treason, yes, I would have no problem with him being sent to the gas chamber, Morgan, whose show airs on KSFO-AM, told The Chronicle on Wednesday. It is about revealing classified secrets in the time of war. And the media has got to take responsibility for revealing classified information that is putting American lives at risk. (Emphasis added.)Behold the forces that have been unleashed by this despicable and dishonest attack on the Times by the White House, Congressman Pete King and their craven enablers in the conservative media. Who owns KSFO-AM? Who are its advertisers? Are they OK with this?Morgan has since (apparently unsuccessfully) attempted to get the Prospect to publish this response to recent attacks against her there:To: letters@prospect.orgSent: Sunday, July 02, 2006 6:57 PMSubject: Response from Melanie Morgan to Greg Sargent (please forward to Mr. Sargent)If the Left ever wonders why so many conservatives are outraged by what they read from Liberal publications (such as the American Prospect) one need not meander any further than Greg Sargent’s interview with me last Thursday. No, I am NOT backing away from any of the comments I made in the Horses Mouth” blog. But I am pointing out that the summarization of my comments is completely misleading, and totally in character for people who despise those of us who work ceaselessly to stand-up for our troops in time of war, and who are outraged when others refuse to do the same.First, folks, to the headline:TALK SHOW HOST MELANIE MORGAN SAYS ANY NEWSPAPER EDITOR WHO PUBLISHES CLASSIFIED INFO SHOULD BE LOCKED IN A STEEL CAGE, MURDERED BY FAMILY MEMBERS OF SLAIN TROOPS, AND SENT TO THE HOTTEST CORNER OF HELL.The truth: I pointed out in my comments that if a person is TRIED AND CONVINCTED of committing treason then obviously they should face the punishment for that crime. That includes the death penalty.I never suggested murdering Bill Keller of the NY Times or anyone else. Period. Look up the definition of murder. Its in Wikipedia, by the way.The protest by The American Prospect and other anti-war liberals in the blogosphere over my statements shows either a naivete concerning the law, or more likely it demonstrates once again that those in the Blame America First crowd are rabidly against the war on terrorism, and are blinded by all logic and reason. And then there was this by Mr. Sargent Now she’s basically said that any editor printing classified national security information should be murdered, maybe it’s time to check in with the corporate owners of her local station.Again– a complete mischaracterization of my quotes. A more accurate summary should have read Any editor who is responsible for leaking classified information and results in the deaths of American soldiers at a time of war should face the ultimate punishment for that crime, including the death penalty. The exact quote to Mr. Sargent is Let me answer your question with a question. If by leaking classified information that resulted in the deaths of American soldiers– let’s just say that a terrorist purchased all the ingredients necessary for an IED and detonated it against a convoy of 18, 19, 20-something Marines, killing them— do you honestly think I would give a rat’s rear-end how the editor who leaked that information dies? ….NO. I DO NOT CARE.Because, after all, he or she is recieving the ultimate penalty for the charge of treason. My WISH list for traitors who undertake to subvert national security interests that results in the deaths of American Soldiers is to be locked in a steel cage with the family members of slain troop members who would happily deliver the ultimate punishment of death, and then sent to the hottest corner of hell.As a journalist of over 30 years experience covering the Mideast, the uprising for Democracy at Tiannamen Square in China, the return of hostages from the hijacking of a jetliner, I have a bit of experience in observing media convention, classified secrets, and the rule of law. And apparently Richard Valeriani, a long time former NBC reporter agrees by saying that the New York Times decision to publish is akin to giving Anne Franks address to the Nazis.I might also point out to Mr. Sargent that his squealing over my comments most likely would evaporate if one of his friends or loved ones were to suffer harm at the hands of the terrorists as a result of the repeated attempts to undermine the war effort by deliberately leaking/publishing classified material, and in doing so provided aid and comfort to the enemy. One other thing. And my radio station KSFO AM in San Francisco, owned by ABC/Disney, has no intention of firing me.After all, there is a First Amendment. And it works both ways. Much as the Left hates that.I look forward to seeing my comments in print.Melanie Morgan,KSFO, San FranciscoCo-Host, Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan ShowWhile most issues of this nature might be expected to blow over after a few days, this one is still going strong, fueled by the likes of Salon.com and the NYTs own Frank Rich, who lambasted Morgan in his column yesterday:All the News Thats Fit to BullyBy FRANK RICHTWO weeks and counting, and the editor of The New York Times still has not been sentenced to the gas chamber. What a bummer for one California radio talk-show host, Melanie Morgan, who pronounced The Times guilty of treason and expressly endorsed that punishment. She and the rest of the get-the-press lynch mob are growing restless, wondering why newspapers havent been prosecuted under the Espionage Act. If Bush believes what he is saying, taunted Pat Buchanan, why does he not do his duty as the chief law enforcement officer of the United States?Heres why. First, there is no evidence that the Times article on tracking terrorist finances either breached national security or revealed any “secrets” that had not already been publicized by either the administration or Swift, the Belgian financial clearinghouse enlisted in the effort.Second, the legal bar would be insurmountable: even Gabriel Schoenfeld, who first floated the idea of prosecuting The Times under the Espionage Act in an essay in Commentary, told The Nation this month that the chance of it happening was .05 percent. And, from Salon.com:The state secrets that werent secretRight-wingers desperate to intimidate the press have accused the New York Times of treason for publishing details of a terror investigation — ignoring the fact that everything significant about that operation has been known for years.By Joe ConasonLosing the national debate over the war in Iraq while falling to unprecedented lows in public approval, the Republican right is returning to a favorite smear tactic: charging the loyal opposition with treason. For now the New York Times is the most prominent target of these charges, having published an article on the Bush administrations investigation of terrorist money laundering using SWIFT, an international banking correspondence system. But the current campaign against the paper of record is merely rehearsal for a barrage of accusations against Democrats as the November midterm approaches. In recent days, the buzzing swarm of right-wing drones has spread the treason meme, from the House Republican caucus to Fox News Channel, MSNBC, talk radio and the Internet. The ubiquitous Ann Coulter compared Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger to Tokyo Rose, while a California radio host named Melanie Morgan, who also operates a Republican-funded Web site, convicted Times executive editor Bill Keller of capital treason and urged his execution by gas chamber. A Wall Street Journal editorial suggested that (unlike the Journal news editors who also had published the SWIFT story) the Times is guilty of intentionally “obstructing” the war on terror.Weekly Standard editor William Kristol demanded on Fox News that the Justice Department prosecute the Times under the Espionage Act. (If Kristol and his ilk really believe that the Times is a nest of traitors, shouldnt they call for their patriotic friend David Brooks to resign from the papers Op-Ed page?)Even though liberal columnists continue to pound away at Morgan, other than the KSFO host herself, its hard to see whos really gaining from this continued fuss.

The people within the United States government who actually leaked to the NYTimes, WaPo, LAT, and Wall Street Journal such a successful, worthy program as the SWIFT database should join the folks I have suggested in taking up residence in the hottest corner of hell. Finally, Im delighted to report that your efforts to have me blackballed from Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC were entirely unsuccessful.
Array-ne Intensity of Religious IdentityHow Muslims, Evangelicals and Protestants fareHow Muslims Compare With Other Religious Americans In Intensity of Religious Identity, Not Unlike Evangelicals by Robert Ruby and Greg Smith, Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life July 6, 2007Although Muslims constitute a small minority in the United States, and their holy book and many of their religious rituals are distinctly their own, Muslim Americans are by no means the other when it comes to religious life or politics in the United States. Those notably high percentages set all three groups apart from Catholics (49%) and white mainline Protestants (36%).When asked about how they think of their personal identity, only about a quarter (28%) of all Muslim Americans say they identify themselves first as an American rather than as a Muslim. Muslim Americans, simply put, are far more politically liberal than evangelicals, and more similar in their basic political outlook to black Protestants, secular Americans and, in some instances, white mainline Protestants.Among Muslims, only 11% say they are Republicans or lean Republican; Black Protestants are even more heavily Democratic than Muslims, while white evangelicals are substantially less Democratic. The largest numbers of Muslim Americans define their political ideology as moderate, as is the case with most other groups. About 60% of Muslim Americans, for instance, say that homosexuality should be discouraged, a figure close to that recorded among white evangelicals, and substantially higher than among other groups. On the question of whether government should be involved in protecting morality, Muslim Americans are even more supportive of government action than evangelicals (or any other group).

The casual wording of my lame sex life [from a website for a church’s ministry she links to] pulls the shiny wrapping paper off the sex is fun, meaningless and required to live marketing. It puts us on the same side - people who want loving relationships that work and meaningful sex. I love it that she puts herself on the same side as Christians who want their sexuality to honor the One who gave it, rather than putting herself, as a single person, on the “other side” from those who are married. (Or that, speaking from the standpoint of a [anonymous] married person, “everyone else” must have a better one than I do, or, mine would be so much better with “X“ person.) The myth of magic, wonderful, grass-is-always-greener sex has got to have its bogus cover blown way off!

-ne ‘The -million dollar lesson!’A recent title to an editorial in ‘China Daily,’ probably the most widely read English-speaking publication in China: ‘As we get wealthier, do we get happier?.’ I read the editorial (in the February 11-12th edition) and had to respond to this question, as I talk about this subject all the time in ‘The Daily Dosage.’ Today’s ‘Dose,’ entitled, ‘The -million dollar lesson!’I have some experience in China now, almost a year, and from Shanghai to Kashigar (the length of the country from east to west). I lived the majority of my life in the U.S., so I know what went on there (while I was there: 1940 to 2004). I’d had a plan, from the time I was 17-years old, and that to work in television in New York City, and my plan worked! Not exactly ‘prime time,’ but I learned some key things, some basic things, as I had thoughtful ‘bosses.’ I got this job at the TV station, when my friends said I’d never work in television. I ended up stationed in New York City, being assigned to the Army Pictorial Center (in Long Island City)—thus using the skills I’d learned working at an NBC affiliate. During my active tour of duty at the Pictorial Center, which took me all over the world, I planned my next move: to get a job at one of the television networks across the East River in ‘the City!’ I had my heart set on working in the ‘big time!’ Impossible, most said! I lived like the ‘other half’ (rich people) live, but guess what! I’m still amazed, how life appears at one ‘stage,’ only to appear completely differently at another ‘stage!’ I went on to work for the other television networks (wouldn’t give up), only to discover, I was right the first time! I think what’s important in life is living to discover your own destiny! I had to live my own life to discover what’s important to me, and to ‘allow’ my destiny to evolve! I wanted to get $ rich, make a million dollars before I was 30-years of age, get the beauty queen and live happily ever after! ‘Those who are not busy being born, are busy dying!’ (Bob Dylan)Be ‘busy being born!’ And, all the time!Seek the unknown, by creating a life worth living, by giving to others (less ‘fortunate’), by discovering who you really are!‘Life is a daring adventure, or nothing at all!’ (Helen Keller)Dare to have a great adventure!

Some people can make me smile from just being in the same room as me3. I like tight hugs and when people smile just at you being there (if I’m in a gooey, huggy mood–not very often)27. I like it when people are happy because they make me happy28. I hate when people nod their heads at you instead of saying hi41. I always start giggling when I’m with myself thinking of funny stuff people have said49. I often say I don’t like things in people, but do them myself and don’t realize it63. I don’t like phoning people because I assume if they wanted to talk to me they’d call me (I hate feeling like a bother)69. I wish people wouldn’t change (only some people, of course)71. I hate when people don’t say goodbye before signing off AIM73. I’m perfectly happy sitting doing nothing for hours at a time if I’m with people I love76. I love to make people smile82. I don’t really like hanging out with lots of people all the time88. I hate when you know people think you are up to something, and you can’t help act guilty even though you aren’t95. I wish I had a scent that people thought of me when they smelt it (um, I don’t know if that’s a good thing)97.

My situation was very unique at the time I arrived in Ireland. The first few days when I was in Cork City, walking down the main streets, looking for decent food, food that did not look like eels boiled in lard, I truly believed that I was the sole Malaysian for that academic year.We first met after a few days into the semester. I had actually seen and stared at her in class before, sure, several times in fact –but I thought she was a Chinese girl from Indonesia. She knew who I was after a friend of a friend who worked as a clerk in the International Students Office spoke to her about me.That was the first time I spoke in Malay to another human being (and not to a crackling, noisy voice on the phone) since I arrived in Ireland. We fell asleep with our telephones hanging from our ears several times as we were watching late-night reruns of Friends on the telly from our respective bedrooms. We had our Raya photos taken at the steps of the Main Quad (just the two of us, and four times out of six we wore matching Raya dresses) and we sent these photos religiously every single year to Utusan (for her parents) and Harakah (for my parents).Mahirah and I were practically inseparable. We spent more time with each other per day than we have time for our own private selves. That dress looks nice on you, Mahirah, I came out frank. Nothing was on that night to help me forget the haunting image of Mahirah for a moment long enough so that I could close my eyes and doze off.The next morning, on the city bus to do our Saturday groceries, I asked for her hand.4.In a few minutes, it will be exactly 24 hours.A few hours ago, I had dinner alone for the first time since my student days. The last time I ate dinner in front of the TV, Pop threw a large chunk of potato at me and it bounced off of my face. It’s dinner time, sit here. From the time I proposed to her on the bus to the time we consummated our marriage in a 3-star hotel in a lakeside resort town, it took us less than five weeks in total. I remember Mahirah’s Lebanese housemate and her classmates bursting into tears when they saw her coming out of the back room with her silk veil on.When the aqad was fulfilled, Mahirah began sobbing, and her tears ruined the makeup.7.Our true first year of marriage only began after we have returned home to Malaysia and we had decided to settle down in Shah Alam. We looked forward to our future together. But somehow, we failed to look at where we were and where we had come from as a couple. We had never given ourselves the proper time to get to know each other as lovers. We still did everything together, and we still talked about everything all the time, but our minds were always someplace else. After returning home, Mahirah and I were kept busy by our obligations to our work and to our marriage, and we unknowingly repeated the same mistakes that we did as a student couple. We assumed that there would be time for it later. But as God had willed it this afternoon, time was not on our side. One Maghrib, Mahirah began to sob quietly when I was reciting a prayer asking God for blessed happiness in our marriage. Hearing her sob, I cut the prayer short and when I turned to face her, she was already in tears and her face was buried deep in her hands. What is wrong Mahirah, I asked her. and a hyped male lead.Somehow, after watching that film, Mahirah began talking again. On the drive back home, Mahirah was laughing cheerfully and telling jokes and pulling pranks and moving her body to the car stereo, and we were just having a blast.Mahirah was so in high spirits that we ended up in bed and we made beautiful love for the first time since her becoming less talkative. And this was odd because I know Mahirah and she is a great kisser and she knows it and she loves it.As we cuddled, her head on my arm and my fingers running through her hair, Mahirah spoke of our good old days at the UCC.
