Get out of the house already!: September 2005
Array-ne Here is the daily schedule the kids here at the ashram follow and how Raj and I have been able to fit into it:5:15am Wakeup Bell RingsWe were okay waking up the first two days, but today we woke up late and missed all the morning activities. Raj and I had a good time yesterday racing the kids.6:15am Clean, get ready for the dayRaj and I also use this time to wash our clothes from the day before. All students wear uniforms, all teachers are addressed as sir or madam, students must stand up to give and answer in class and canât sit back down until the teacher says so, all students stand up when any adult walks into the room regardless of what is going on at the time, etc. I do realize that its easy to motivate kids for one day, but to be able to do this day in and day out is a whole another ball gameâ¦and I say that from experience. Still, the past few days have really been a strong push for me to continue my teaching career at some point in the future.1:00pm School ends, Walk back to the Ashram1:20pm LunchRotli, Daal, Baath, Shaak.2:00pm Quiet TimeAll the kids have to be in their rooms at this time. The only downside is that the sir gets quite upset and kids who arenât singing all out.7:30pm DinnerRotli, daal baath, shaak.8:30pm Free Time9:00pm End of the Day, Time to SleepWeâve hard a hard time sleeping. link

-ne My husband may find my ways circuitous and mysterious, but in the end, he often appreciates the result.Last night, Bruce lay supine on the family-room sofa listening to 70s and 80s era rock-and-roll music (I still find myself toe-tapping to ACDCâs âShook Me All Night Longâ), the fire-place and sconces lit. children able to buckle themselves in the car, kids reading to themselves, growing and changing and learning and rebelling. All this and more is around the corner, and though Iâm noticing a startling amount of gray hair these days, Iâm also aware of a growing wisdom â I feel at times like a wizened old shaman who is teaching her followers. We still use baby-bibs, but not often â I sorted through them keeping only several of the biggest and most absorbent, giving away a whopping 17.Among the other items recently purged and donated:2 Boppys (rarely used)2 Crib skirts (possibly never used)4 books about being pregnant10 infant hats (also never used â my kidsâ heads were so big, they just popped off)20 rattles (now, seriously, how many rattles does a baby need?)22 pairs of shoes36 pairs of socks (almost all of these came out of Ellieâs drawer)44 pieces of infant clothing (boy-stuff only; this doesnât include the prodigious amount Iâm forwarding to my sister-in-law)52 pieces of toddler clothing (girl-stuff only)55 items of maternity clothing (stuff I had âlostâ during my last pregnancy and only just found â how I wish Iâd remembered about them!)Aside from these donations, I have taken other drastic measures to establish my post-babyhood-dom. No longer any room in it for a baby, even if he would tolerate being âcagedâ (which he wonât).What Iâm finding is that I have a hell of a lot more storage space in my house.Iâm also realizing that were I to decorate a room, it might actually be noticeable through the dwindling forest of toys and infant-equipment. link
-ne Car’s ‘black box’ leads to charges against owner Saturday, September 03, 2005By Tom Rademacher and John AgarThe Grand Rapids PressGRAND RAPIDS — An automotive black box showed that a Jenison woman was speeding when her car hit and seriously injured a Kent County Road Commission worker patching a highway, Kent County prosecutors said Friday.Prosecutors charged Joanne Schaap, 48, with speeding in a construction zone, causing an accident. He thinks the data compiled from the technology will make travel safer in coming years by providing crash information to make safety improvements. The technology is increasingly available, with computers playing major roles in automobiles, but it is not without debates about privacy.Kowalick said the technology captures only the moment of impact — it isn’t a monitor of driving behavior or routes. The technology speaks for the victims, he said.State police used it to determine the speed of the car that hit Hollemans ranged from 65 mph to 79 mph upon impact. link
-ne I’ve now got power at my house, and am told that the phone service may be restored as soon as some time next week. The bike’s already proved its merit, thanks to Katrina, so now I just have to work on conditioning and wait for the weather to cool down a bit over the next few months.I look forward to some golf/bike combo trips this fall and winter. link
